Anti Folk started in the 80's on the lower East Side of New York. It started to center itself in a bar and pub called Sidewalk Cafe on Avenue A. Alphabet City as it was called and a junkie haven of sorts.

The anti folk were to folk what punk was to rock, the raw forced edge driving it to the limits. Many wandering minstrals came to New York City to claim their fame and started by standing in line to play a 10 minute set and claim a spot in Anti Folk history.

Anti Folk started to make a mark in the EU through the UK in early 2000. Talent from the USA started to appear at clubs in London and soon the genre spread.
