Description
The first editor of the journal was James Whitacre MS RRT, serving in that capacity as a volunteer until 1966. Allan Saposnick MS RRT followed as editor until 1968. Philip Kittredge RRT, who also began his editorial career as a volunteer, became the first staff editor until his retirement in 1986. Pat Brougher RRT (editor, 1986-1997) has also recently retired, ushering in the appointment of the journal's first physician editor, David J. Pierson MD, Professor of Medicine at the University of Washington in Seattle.
is a science journal, and, as such, its mission is to disseminate information, viewpoints, and questions about respiratory disease, research, clinical and laboratory practice, education, and management of resources. Everything in R
is related to patient care science. Therefore, the core of the contents -- the articles and case reports -- is reviewed and edited to standards of scientific and scholarly excellence. Certain other sorts of articles, such as letters and points of view, deal with the same topics and may express opinions, but the patient always remains the focus, directly or indirectly.
