Description
As a volunteer, non-profit organization, NMR provides current, evidence-based breastfeeding information, teaches breastfeeding techniques and gives advice and support to mothers who wish to breastfeed.
NMR has been supporting breastfeeding in the Triangle area for over thirty years. Each month two free public meetings are open to mothers, babies and any women interested in breastfeeding. Fathers are the focus at regular Couple's Meetings. Books and videos about breastfeeding and a wide variety of parenting topics are available in a lending library. Telephone advice and assistance from trained Counseling Mothers are available at all times and affordable rentals and sales of breast pumps are obtainable from volunteers throughout the Triangle. Counseling Mothers are extensively trained by certified lactation consultants at monthly in-service education meetings, pass a written exam and attend the annual three-day Art of Breastfeeding Conference presented by the Wake Area Health Education Center. NMR also provides an informational and educational brochure to parents through childbirth classes, doctor's offices, clinics and hospitals. No fees or dues are charged.
This website includes information on our twice monthly support meetings. It also includes basic information on the benefits of breastfeeding, how to tell if breastfeeding is going well, and addresses some of the common concerns of both stay-at-home-mothers, and mothers who choose to work outside of the home yet continue to breastfeed. There is also a brochure PDF file giving telephone numbers of volunteer counseling mothers that can give evidence based breastfeeding advice and support at anytime.
