- Sharp sand is also known as builder’s sand. It has sharp, unweathered edges that make it gritty & appropriate for mixing concrete. Sharp sand is also used as a soil amendment: it makes tight soils looser & gets a lot of use in bonsai cultivation. The same substance, sharp sand, has opposite effects depending on the application: one more amazing fact about the world & perhaps an appropriate emblem for something as coarse & loose as a poet’s weblog.
