* A computer is an extension of the intellectual self. Just as a company claims some portion of an individual's self in return for compensation, this policy claims some portion of an individual's computer in return for compensation. However, just as a company can expect an employee to arrive properly dressed for work, without incurring responsibility for paying for clothes, the company could similarly expect employees to arrive appropriately computerized.

This consensus poll is to decide company's policy regarding the laptops for its permanent employees.

Goals

  • To create a consistent policy which allows permanent staff to have a laptop to work with as their primary machine both in the office and at home
  • To share the cost in acknowledgment of the fact that it will be used for work and at the same time, it will be used for personal reasons and that employees may own the machines after a period of six months.

Policy

  • Eligiblity: Employees that have worked for AboutUs in a full-time capacity for three months are eligible for this program.
  • Contribution: The company will pay 80% of the cost of eligible employee's laptops.
  • Duration: Employees are eligible for one laptop every two years.
  • Retro-active: This policy is retro-active to any laptop purchased during full-time employment at AboutUs
  • Approved: New laptop purchases will be from an approved list so all staff is working on compatible platform. Add-ons (hardware, software, media) are not included in the program and must not interfere with approved capability.
  • Installments: The staff members can choose to pay for the laptops in up to six monthly installments
  • Compensation: At the time the "laptop contribution" is made by the company, the amount contributed by the company becomes a taxable event to the employee and will be subject to tax in the same manner as ordinary compensation.

Rational

  • A computer is an extension of the intellectual self.
  • Continuing the clothes analogy, the company's right to inspect an employees computer is equal to the company's right to inspect the employees pockets. However, the company can reasonably insist that work products be maintained or checked in regularly to company owned or administered computers where they would be fully subject to company policy.
