Purpose
Just like the blog community has the orange "radio waves" RSS icon , we want an easily-recognizable universal "Edit This" button. This is a movement to start the ball rolling. When this process succeeds, the participating wikis will include this edit button in some way. See the Discussion.

Just like the RSS icon evolved over time (......), we recognize that the UniversalWikiEditButton will also evolve over time. Rather than struggling to create a perfectly evocative button for version 0.1, we recognize our primary objective is quickly getting to wide deployment of a single icon that is "good enough".

This exercise will be a success if we can demonstrate the ability of the wider wiki community to self organize for collective action.

Principles
The following principles guided our selection of the 0.1 UniversalWikiEditButton and will inform our selection of version 0.2

* Compatible ... Should work well with the WikiCommunityMark

* Language-independent ... See translations of "edit" - most of these don't easily fit in an icon. While the icon itself won't have text, wiki communities may choose to use it in conjunction with a textual edit link (see the example below) until they feel that the icon is universally understood

* Wiki-engine-independent The concept fails this, as not all wikkis have editable sections.

* Evocative of Edit... Chalk fails on this point. Chalk is associated with blackboards in school, which are erased at the end of the day.

* Metaphorically Rich ... wiki is more than "just" editing.

* Professional

* Simple ... works at 12x12 gray for usage in places where unobtrusiveness is required (e.g., section edits)

* Skinnable ... sites that need to adapt the color to fit their scheme can do so without confusion

* Retaskable ... useful in the url bar to indicate (this is a wiki, it's editable), useful as a large attention grabbing "main edit button", useful as an unobtrusive section edit link

Good Enough For Version 0.1
After an extensive brainstorming phase, we agree that the following icons are "good enough" for version 0.1 of the UniversalWikiEditButton. We think version 0.1 will define the metaphor to use, and that subsequent versions will iterate on the visual appearance of the icon.

* Chalk icon. If you don't have a color preference, please use green. Otherwise, use what fits in your color scheme. Simple, memorable, 3D button, similar in style to RSS icon. Metaphor is collaborative. May look like a band-aide or stapler to some. May not evoke "edit" when people see it. If used in orange, color is strong and draws attention to the most important element on a wiki page; may however confuse some people who think it is the RSS button. Examples of Use

** Outline version

** Square button version, useful if placed in rectangular tabs

** gray / outline 12x12 pixel version for sectional edit within a page

** / big 64x64 pixel version

** Unused versions: orange; , and outline versions

Note on branding: Please use the icon we agree on consistently. Do not mirror the icon, change the color or alter it too much in other ways. People will get used to the universal wiki edit button quicker if the icon looks the same across all wikis. Having said that, the icon will be developed over time.

Wikis Supporting The Button
To spread the idea and to support the adoption of the Universal Wiki Edit Button, early adoption is needed. If you voted "Good Enough" already, please support the idea by adding the icon to your Wiki or ask your Wiki administrator to do so.

If your Wiki or Wiki Engine already features the Universal Wiki Edit Button, please add it to the list below:

* DokuWiki -- 0.1 version is included in current development release

* Ward's Wiki has an earlier version (pencil) in use on the site.

* Version 0.1 of the button is used in the Wikis of WikiMatrix, ForumMatrix, WeblogMatrix and PodcatcherMatrix

Discussion of the terms 'Button' and 'Icon'
The terms 'Button' and 'Icon' seem to be in use interchangeably here. A button is a device used to produce an action, and therefore a 'UniversalWikiEdit Button' means that the action called by the button should be universal for all wikis. However, what is being proposed here is to create an icon for editing a wiki, to be used universally across all wikis.
