In my paintings I use a variety of materials. The surface texture is formed using plaster or modeling paste which is then worked with an assortment of tools that include sticks, palette knife, brushes, various sized scrapers, and even my hands. The paint is a selection of acrylics mixed with glazes and sometimes powdered pigments and cold wax. The support is either birch or gallery wrapped canvas. While the heavily textured surface is not defined, it often suggests elements of landscape and weathered surfaces seen in nature. Having a background in plein-air landscape painting and faux painting has prepared me to explore this new abstract world. I find it exciting to build layers of texture while keeping color harmony. I am often delighted by what is revealed underneath when selected areas are carved and scraped away. We all see abstraction around us in nature on such surfaces as weathered walls, sidewalks, and decaying buildings. This is often the source of my inspiration.
