A major firm in The Bahamas today, Higgs & Johnson traces its beginnings to January 1948, making it also the oldest Bahamian law firm. Its founders the Honourable Godfrey W. Higgs & Mr. Mervyn Johnson established their novel legal partnership at a time when other lawyers were either in solo or father-and-son practices. The firm which prides itself on continuing to play a leadership role in the profession through the years, has carried on practice under the same name up to the present.
The firm has also established a separate company - H & J Corporate Services Limited - which has assumed the corporate management practice previously conducted by the firm. The Corporate Services company is also represented in Nassau, Freeport and Lyford Cay.
Our Practice
The Firm offers a wide range of commercial services and has earned a reputation as one of the country's leading commercial practices. Clients range from leading international businesses and banks to private individuals. Through its historic strong connections with leading law Firms in New York, London and other foreign commercial centres and in association with Terralex, an international association of law Firms, the practice of the partnership is attuned to related international matters. In order to serve each area of commercial law, the Firm is organised into groups of lawyers and paralegals headed by individual partners. Where a client requires assistance in more than one area of practice, partners and associates collaborate in teams to provide a comprehensive service.
