The History of The Georgia GuardDawg
In 2003, a dedicated Conservative, Senior Matt Joe, recognized the overwhelming presence of liberalism in the classroom and the newspapers. In response, he established The Georgia GuardDawg to provide the conservative viewpoint on issues horribly slanted by the faculty and the media. Joe understood that most people form in college the ideals and principles they will hold for the rest of their life, and he sought to educate his fellow students of the view not covered in class.
With Joe's graduation at the end of the 2003-2004 school year, the paper faced a difficult transition. Few student papers last beyond the graduation of their founder, but two rising seniors, Harris Martin and Charles Repine, shared Joe's vision and recognized the need of a conservative paper at the university. Their determination kept the paper alive and expanded its staff, recruiting younger students who had the same vision that they did: the need for a conservative paper, and the great opportunity it provides.
Now, with the close of the 2004-2005 year, leadership has again changed hands. The Publisher, David Kirby, is a double major in finance and philosophy. An Eagle Scout and 2003 Georgia Right to Life speech competition winner, he has a history of service and dedication for the conservative cause. The Editor-in-Chief, Matthew Hillis, is a longtime conservative who is committed to making a significant contribution to the GuardDawg. Matthew is a double major in Business and Biology, and will soon apply to dental school at the Medical College of Georgia. He has several years of experience with our publishing software and will be working to improve the layout of the paper. With their various backgrounds, they will make an excellent pair to lead the GuardDawg through the 2005-2006 school year.
