Emerson (EMS) is a technology company that distributes products and services to a large variety of industries, commercial markets or individual consumers. The St Louis based company has achieved an impressive place in the famous Fortune 500 list with a sales figure in 2006 going over the 20 billion landmark.

The Website

GoToEmerson.com is perhaps one of the most representative samples of the contemporary corporate web design style. While lacking any interesting information for the casual reader, the structure of the website as well as the technologies involved are all very up to date and from this perspective represent the company’s values in a flawless fashion. What stands apart is the extensive use of the video technology to present several key speeches regarding the trends and the corporate philosophy pushed forward.

The main sections you would expect to find on such a site are all there whether is the investor relations section or the careers section. What the website lacks is the voice of its own employees. The entire corporate speech revolves strictly around the voice of the top management.

History

The company was created in 1890 by the Scotland-born brothers Charles and Alexander Meston and they name it after its principal investor, John Wesley Emerson. By that time the company was famous for the production of electric motors and fans, using a model of electric motor created by Meston brothers. Their success grew stronger after a few years when they began to produce electric sewing machines, electric dental drills and power tools. Also, during the World War II, Emerson Electric became the largest manufacturer of airplane armament. By 1973 the company registered a billion dollar income and had almost 31,000 employees. Under C.F Knight, Emerson start producing technologically advanced products used in telecommunications, electronics, heating, air conditioning. In the 1990’s Emerson evolved into a major enterprise increasing its sales overseas and in 2000 the company created Emerson Telecommunications and Emerson Energy Systems.

Nowadays, Emerson Electric has over 128,000 employees and more than 270 manufacturing locations all over the world and the expansion continues. From its modest beginnings in St. Louis, Missouri, Emerson emerged as an US leader in technology and engineering fields and in 2006 the company reported an aggregated income coming from its more than 60 divisions of 20,3 billion dollars.

Impact

Despite its enormous size and profits Emerson is a relative unknown amongst the Americans. Also even the fact that most of the company’s operations are based in U.S means that the global reach of which the company is proud of is nothing more than empty spin. There were however several occasions in which the company made the headlines. The most recent event of this type has an almost anecdotic value: the company sued the producers of the famous T.V series “Heroes” for portraying one of Emerson products in a negative light. The culprit here is an unspectacular waste disposal machine which happens to cut the fingers to one of the main characters.

Obviously the large number of people employed by the company in cities such as St. Louis made the Emerson brand a part of everyday life. But this is a strict localized phenomenon.

Overall the company achieved its prosperity in a very quiet fashion. This is perhaps the reason for which Emerson managed to gradually develop unhindered by the intrusive media attention.

Despite this perceived lack of media attention Emerson did receive the attention of the financial environments through the numerous excellence awards it received the few years. The sound financial results made the company achieve a different kind of celebrity on Wall Street and perhaps this is the sort of celebrity that truly matters.
