XML uses embedded tags to define the structure of data. Anyone can write their own tags to label any piece of data they have. Standards bodies and commercial sectors worldwide have created and will continue to define market-specific document type definitions (DTDs) for use in B2B applications. Content providers can also define their own sets of tags to suit their own requirements, and supply them in a DTD that is attached to the XML file.

XML is an independent standard that is being defined and maintained by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) which consists of academic institutions and commercial software vendors. It is being adopted as the standard for data interchange between many organisations and organisation types.
