David and Co operates a free helpline which receives some 10,000 calls from individuals per annum. The main purpose of the helpline is to match client’s circumstances with appropriate remedies. The advisors set out the options for the client, guide them through their current income/expenses and offer suggestions to the client to reduce expenditure and increase income: tax, minimum wage, benefits and tax credits, income based job seekers allowance, income support, pensions credits, working tax credit, child tax credit, housing benefit, council tax benefit, other benefits & income. Additional advice is also offered in establishing a personal budget, dealing with priority debts, credit debts and mortgage/rent arrears advice to provide immediate support to the individual.
Once the initial advice has been provided and information collated in a Statement of Affairs the advisors may decide an informal creditor agreement, Individual Voluntary Arrangement (English legislation), Scottish Trust Deeds (Scottish legislation), debt scheduling or bankruptcy (sequestration in Scotland) would be appropriate, based on the individual’s position. The Statement of Affairs and information pack is sent to the individual to complete and return. During this time a specific adviser will be appointed to answer any questions or offer further advice/support.
