My quest for ancient and medieval coins began longer ago than even I care to remember. Actually it was in 1968 when, at the age of 13, I attended a local coin auction which offered a lot of two Roman coins and a book about them. Fortunately, I was the only one in the room willing to make a bid and my meager budget allowed me to make the purchase for a total of about $8.00. (I still have one of the coins).
The next few years were very frustrating as Western Canada was not a hotbed of ancient coins and I was forced to search further abroad for more sources. Over time I acquired many items surplus to my own collection and in 1986 started R.D.K. ANCIENT COINS as a way of selling my duplicates and excess items.
Tom Preston
Tom Preston (formerly Assistant to the Curator at the University of Calgary Nickle Arts Museum coin department) joined the firm as a partner in 1989, bringing a wide expertise in modern coinage having begun his study of such coins in the late 1950's. When Tom joined the firm the name was changed to Calgary Coin & Antique Gallery to better reflect the expanded scope of the business to include all types of modern coins including Canadian coins.
