About Bygone Arts

Bygone Arts is a new venture. We all realized that we share a love of the arts and crafts of days gone by, and enjoy preserving these remnants of our ancestors' lifestyle. We created Bygone Arts to share these crafts with others, and to enable us to devote our time to learning and perfecting our arts. Since Bygone Arts is just beginning, our list of available products is rather sparse at the moment--check back often over the next few months as we expand.

Morgan Franck specializes in Medieval-style calligraphy. She recently graduated from Oberlin College with a degree in Medieval history. As part of her undergraduate work, she devoted a great deal of time to studying Medieval manuscripts, culminating in the digitization of The Artz Hours, a book of hours in Oberlin College Library's Special Collections. She is currently working on a Master's Degree in Medieval Studies at Fordham University. She enjoys recreating the art of Medieval monks in her own work: not only does it give her an excuse to spend long hours staring at Medieval manuscripts, but she can take advantage of the meditative aspects of Medieval calligraphy and illumination.

Morgan also enjoys sewing Medieval costumes. She likes creating accurate reproductions--the best way to understand a person is to wander around in their clothes for a while, so she finds that creating reproduction costumes gives her insight into Medieval life. However, she also likes wearing comfortable clothing, and enjoys making clothing that has a nice period look to it, but is easy to wear.
