University of Birmingham Debating Society
Description
The Deb Soc was the first student society created at opening of the Guild of Students during the infancy of the University, with the aim of fostering an environment of intellectual exchange on issues of great concern to rival and surpass that found in the University's elder peers such as Oxford and Cambridge. Lofty goals indeed, the society has come a long way since then, but we still are pursuing those goals - and having a lot of fun to boot!
We train up members of the society and send teams away to compete on the British Debating Circuit, at such venues as Oxford, UCL, Durham and LSE. We also compete in international competitions, with our teams having competed admirably from Dublin to South Africa to Singapore.
We also run popular Weekly Debates on Thursday evenings in the Guild Council Chamber, which are free for all to attend. The week's motion is posted around the Campus on red posters and on the front page of this site. For members there is always the opportunity to sit on one of the teams for the weekly debate to brush up and practice your skills!
