The Blackthorn Gift Shop
Description
Cead Mile Failte
The Blackthorn Gift Shop was opened in 1963 by my Mother - Mary O’Hagan. Previously this the shop was a simple ‘Confectionary & Newsagents’ but gradually over the years my Mother turned this ordinary shop into, as one customer recently described it, ‘an Irish Aladdin’s’ cave.
The ‘Blackthorn’ has weathered the political and economic troubles that beset Lurgan and the rest of Northern Ireland. During the height of the ‘troubles’, in the 1970’s and 1980’s Lurgan suffered it’s fair share of bombing, shootings and civil strife, the shop continued to trade, helping to establish it’s reputation of a shop well known for it’s Celtic ethos and also able to get a bargain to boot!
Today the shop has changed slightly for the year’s gone bye. My Mother is ‘sort of retiring’ and myself, Turlough O’Hagan, ‘is sort of taking over’. Now that might sound typically Irish, but if you have visited the shop and met Mrs O’Hagan, I’m sure you know exactly what I am taking about.
