- In the early 1990's a group of researchers based in a federal institution (*) for education and research in Curitiba, Brazil, started the academic development of algorithms for the analysis and matching of fingerprints. Throughout the decade, the research staff received research grants from the Brazilian government followed by financial support from the Foundation Banco Do Brasil, and recently from corporate sponsors. In 1996 they founded Antheus Tecnologia Ltda. The first contract in June 1999 was for the identification of convicts in a Brazilian penitentiary in Porto Alegre, in the State of Rio Grande do Sul in the South of Brazil.
