AdSense for Search

OurWork < DevelopmentTeam < Priorities < (3) AdSense for Search (Ali Aslam)

edit What (summary)

Part of the AdvertisingRevenue project, this task incorporates AdSense into our search results.

edit Why this is important

The Revenue from advertisements is one of the drivers of our business model. We need to understand and tap the potential to serve advertisements along with our search results.

edit DoneDone

  • AdSense has been incorporated into our search results.
  • AdSense for Search results are first on the page for several days
  • We can relatively easily experiment with how we present the ads in the search results (by present we mean where they appear in the page, how many ads are included, and how they are styled).

edit Steps to get to DoneDone

  • Understand how Google Adsense for Search script works.
  • Write a standalone script using the adsense code snippets.
  • Get the hang of mediawiki functionality relevant to this task.
  • Replace the current Google search script currently in use with the Adsense script.
  • Try tweaking the code to allow flexibility in the search box's exact position, style and number of returned results.

edit Concerns/Issues

edit Wednesday, Sep 19

  • Currently, style changes will require generating code snippets from google adsense. Need to research if there is a workaround.

edit Tuesday, Sept 18

  • The Google Adsense for search script stopped working in the afternoon Lahore time. Hence, we could not determine whether our code changes made sense or not.
    • It was a minor issue which has been resolved - Ali Aslam
  • Understanding MediaWiki is turning out to be a harder exercise than initially anticipated.

edit Monday, Sept 17

  • Do not have the key for google adsense. Cannot get it by registering now as google only awards adsense keys to sites that have ~ 100000 views/day.
  • We will manufacture some snippets with our current key and send them by email. -- Ward 17:52, 17 September 2007 (PDT)
  • When a search query is made using AboutUs search bar, will this result in two different google ads displayed on a single page. If that will be the case, it might result in a cluttered page.
