Darbhanga division was created in 1972. Originally, this division consisted of 4 districts, namely, Darbhanga, Samastipur, Madhubani and Begusarai. In 1980s, Begusarai was removed from this division. Since then this division consists of only Darbhanga, Samastipur and Madhubani. Its headquartes is at Darbhanga. Its population, on the basis of census of 2001, is 1,02,69,537. This division consists of 12 subdivisions, 59 blocks and 1110 panchayats.
