As soon as Marvin Wasserman laid eyes on Knight's Beach on the Lake Erie shores he put in an offer. That was 30-odd years ago now, and Wasserman still owns the place, still loves it, still lives out there all summer with his wife Gloria. And his three grown children joke that they want a promise in writing that he'll never sell the place.
"I went to a resort one day and it was so bad then that I came home, phoned a few friends and said 'Find me a little place I can take my kids that's not too far away," the good-natured entrepreneur recalls. "So we went out there - it took about three hours because I had no idea where it was, and couldn't find it - and I bought it that day."
The purchase included the half-mile beach, a campground, a day picnic area as well as a derelict 1888 farmhouse that needed a lot of refurbishing.
