Title
From The Heart Foundation: Providing Basic Health Care to Impoverished Communities in Central America
Description
Doctor Polo Galindo Clinic, located on the main road between the entrance to Oak Ridge and the east Punta Gorda entrance, is a not for profit clinic which provides medical and dental services at a low cost to local people. The staff consists of a bilingual Honduran physician and dentist as well as two nurses and office staff. In addition, American doctors of various specialties volunteer their skills at the clinic for several weeks up to a month at a time and stay in the onsite apartments.
Fees are charged on a sliding scale based on the patient’s ability to pay. The clinic is open from 8:00 to 4:00 Monday through Friday and from 8:00 to 12:00 on Saturday. Dr. Polo Galindo Clinic has a well stocked pharmacy and most medications are able to be provided to patients at no extra charge. The clinic staff is involved in several community outreach programs including training local health providers in the community on such topics as AIDS, diabetes, and nutrition.
Its mission is to bring a sense of hope to small communities in Central America through health education and by providing high quality modern medicine. The foundation’s first major project is the establishment of the Dr. Polo Galindo Clinic. The clinic’s primary source of funding is sales of a photo book, The Bay Islands of Honduras, which is on sale in many resorts, gift shops and realtors’ offices throughout the Bay Islands as well as on the website at http://www.fthfoundation.org/bay_islands_of_honduras_book.htm.
