- Few outdoor hobbies can compare to beekeeping: It is complex yet approachable, rewarding but demanding, sometimes scary for the novice but remarkably pleasant. It is so many things, but most importantly, it is what you want of it or can give to it. Like life, beekeeping gives you what you put into it. Give a little and you will get a little. Give more and the pleasure and closeness with nature will pay dividends, restoring the connection with the natural world we often lose in a technology-driven era. We are taught to overcome nature, not observe it, feel it, and be in it. Beekeeping shrinks the divide, allowing the average person to see one of the most complex creations at work, which puts the human position as steward of the earth in context. We become a part of the puzzle, not a transient observer, and the need to preserve and protect becomes apparent.
