Apptio was founded in 2007 by Sunny Gupta, Kurt Shintaffer and Paul McLachlan. The company received private funding led by Greylock Partners and Madrona Venture Group. Other round investors included Ignition Ventures, Shasta Ventures, Marc Andreessen, Ben Horowitz and Frank Artale.

Management Team

Sunny Gupta, Co-founder, President & CEO

Sunny’s career in enterprise software spans more than 17 years, with roles in general management, strategic marketing, product management and business development. Sunny was awarded the top 40 CEO under 40 award by American Venture Magazine, serves on board of directors for Skytap and advises companies Likewise and webAppVM. Most recently he was EVP Products at Opsware and was responsible for all of Opsware product businesses up to its acquisition by HP for over $1.6 billion. Prior, Sunny was the co-founder and CEO of iConclude, which pioneered the IT runbook automation market and drove its acquisition by Opsware for approximately $70 million in less than 2 years from inception.

Before founding iConclude, Sunny ran the Java/.NET performance management product group for Mercury Interactive (acquired by HP for more than $4Billion); served as Vice President of Marketing and Business Development at Performant (acquired by Mercury Interactive); and served as General Manager of Business Development at Rational Software (acquired by IBM for more than $2Billion) and was part of the team that helped scale the company from $300 Million to $850 Million in revenue. He also co-founded Vigor Technology before its acquisition by Rational and held product management and consulting roles at Easel Corporation and IBM. Sunny earned a bachelor's degree in computer science from the University of South Carolina.

Kurt Shintaffer, Co-founder & CFO

Kurt brings a broad range of experience in financial and operations management to the company. Prior to co-founding Apptio, Kurt oversaw the corporate finance, legal, accounting, human resource, and information technology functions at iConclude. Kurt was instrumental in completing the successful sale of iConclude to Opsware in 2007.

Before joining iConclude, Kurt was VP of Finance at Pacific Edge Software where he led fundraising efforts that secured over $40 million in venture equity and debt financing. Kurt's tenure at Pacific Edge culminated in the sale of the company to Serena Software. Kurt began his career at Ernst & Young LLP's assurance and advisory business services group. He holds a BA in Business Administration from the University of Washington.

Paul McLachlan, Co-founder & Chief Architect

Paul joins Apptio after spending a decade building performance and troubleshooting tools for Java and .NET, first at Compuware/NuMega and more recently at Mercury Interactive and HP, where he was the Chief Architect of the Diagnostics component of Business Availability Center and Load Runner.

At Mercury, Paul led a team of 20 engineers through a multi-year (8 release) feature sprint and incremental re-architecture of Diagnostics, taking the product from nearly failing in the market into Gartner's magic quadrant, resulting in a 6x revenue improvement to over $40M/year. Paul holds a BS in Computer Science from the University of Technology, Sydney.

Larry Blasko, VP Sales

Larry is an accomplished sales executive with over 15 years of experience building and leading high performance sales teams in the enterprise software industry. His successful track record includes leadership roles across the full spectrum of IT operations and application management technologies. At Apptio, Larry is the senior sales executive and has responsibility for worldwide sales and technical field operations.

Prior to joining Apptio, Larry was the Vice President of Sales responsible for HP Software’s enterprise sales organization in the eastern US, a business comprised of six sales regions and a staff of 50 sales professionals. Larry joined HP Software via their acquisition of Opsware, where he was the Senior Vice President of Sales for Eastern North America. While at Opsware, Larry built his sales organization to deliver rapid growth and adoption of Opsware’s data center automation technology. Before joining Opsware, Larry spent over six years in various sales leadership roles at Veritas Software, contributing to their rapid ascent and eventual acquisition by Symantec.

Before beginning his sales career, Larry spent four years as a commissioned officer in the United States Army, after completing his undergraduate BS degree through the Army ROTC program at the University of Scranton. Additionally, Larry holds an MBA from The George Washington University in Washington, DC.

Michel Feaster, VP Products

Michel comes to Apptio with over 10 years of experience across sales, product management and marketing roles in market-leading software companies. She is responsible for product management and strategy at Apptio.

Prior to Apptio, Michel was with Mercury Interactive and HP Software for 10 years. Michel held numerous sales and product management roles including LoadRunner product manager and Director of Products for Quality Center. She was the primary architect of the Opsware acquisition for $1.6B - establishing HP Software as the market leader in datacenter and service automation. She led the integration of the companies and subsequently managed the and automation business.

Mark Jancola, VP Engineering & Operations

Mark is Vice President of Engineering and holds responsibility for design, development, and delivery of the Apptio solution. He is an accomplished R&D executive with over 20 years of experience delivering quality software products and services to business customers. Mark’s broad technical experience includes numerous roles in engineering, IT operations, and product management.

Prior to Apptio, Mark was Vice President of Engineering at HP Software, overseeing worldwide R&D activities in the Business Service Automation (BSA) division. This division encompassed datacenter automation and network management products, and was formed after the acquisition of Opsware Inc. where Mark was Vice President of Engineering. Earlier in his career, Mark devoted a decade of effort to the growth and reinvention of Active Voice Corp, which was acquired by Cisco Systems in 2000. Thereafter, Mark was Director of Engineering within Cisco’s Voice Technology Group.

Mark holds an MBA and BSEE from the University of Washington.

Tom Murphy, VP Customer Success

Tom is an accomplished senior executive with over 20 years experience starting, leading and expanding global services businesses, focused on making customers successful. He brings to Apptio a proven ability to assemble high-performing teams which exceed expectations of the largest and most demanding global customers.

Tom’s success in enterprise application software began at Accenture where he co-founded their Customer Relationship Management (CRM) practice and established and grew the company’s global Siebel Systems delivery capability to over 500 people. He then ran Kintana’s EMEA operations including sales and services. Following Mercury Interactive’s acquisition of Kintana, Tom led Mercury’s Professional Services for IT Governance in Europe, was later responsible for all aspects of partner alliance strategy for Professional Services in North America, and finally led the 30 person Customer Support team for Mercury’s $200 million Application Management business line. Most recently, Tom created all facets of post-sales customer facing services capabilities for Integrien Corporation. Tom earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Santa Clara University.

Stan Shull, VP Strategic Alliances

Stan joined Apptio with 20 years of experience in business development and strategic alliances in enterprise software and software as a service. His track record of success includes developing, negotiating and managing dozens of reseller, OEM and other strategic alliances which generated tens of millions of dollars, created new product and service offerings, facilitated entry into new markets, and led to several successful acquisitions. Most recently, Stan led business development for Intelligent Results, a business intelligence and predictive analytics software company, where he developed the company’s partner ecosystem, closed key partner deals, and drove the company’s acquisition by First Data Corporation.

Earlier in his career, Stan led strategic alliances for IBM’s Rational Software division, managing relationships with some of the industry’s leading players including Microsoft, Hewlett Packard, and Intel. Stan was also Vice President of Business Development and Marketing for NCompass Labs, a web-content management software company. At NCompass, Stan played a central role in driving the company’s rapid growth and its successful acquisition by Microsoft. Stan holds a Bachelor of Science degree in aerospace engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Master of Business Administration from the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration.
