Title

SMALLFARMING NEW ZEALAND

Description

The New Zealand Association of Smallfarmers with it's branches throughout the country, represented the interests of more than 80,000 smallholders. Recently the Associations name was changed to be Smallfarming New Zealand.

The New Zealand Association of Smallfarmers Inc. was formed at the inaugural meeting held in Palmerston North from June 3-4, 1978. This meeting was organised by a joint steering committee for the National and Manuwatu Associations which was set up in September 1977 at the end of a course held at Massey University on "The 10 acre block or farmlet: Establishment and Management" organised by staff at Massy University and the local Agricultural Training Officer.

At the time there were a number of smallholding groups around the country, generally interested in changing District Schemes, which restricted rural residential opportunities, part-time farming and alternative employment opportunities.
