Ladyfest Texas

Description

What's up with the word 'Lady?' Read 'Grrrl...You'll Be A Lady Soon' by Rachel Fudge, reprinted with permission and orginally printed in Bitch: Feminist Response to Pop Culture No. 14

In the summer of 2000, a group of women activists, artists and musicians in Olympia, WA organized a week-long festival of music, art, performance and workshops. This landmark event updated the Riot Grrrl movement for the 21st century and showcased the skills and talents of a diverse group of groundbreaking women working in the arts, community building and activism. They called it Ladyfest and a movement was born. In 2001, four more Ladyfests emerged out of Glasgow, Scotland; Bloomington, Indiana; Chicago and New York City, each festival reflecting the unique characteristics of the community. The year 2002 saw twelve more Ladyfests in such cities as San Francisco, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Washington, DC and London. By the end of 2003, thirty-nine Ladyfests had taken place around the world.

Ladyfest Texas is a non-profit, do-it-yourself community-based arts festival. Our mission is to provide a forum in which all members of the community can celebrate, showcase and encourage the artistic, organizational and political talents of women and girls. This participatory festival features performances by bands, spoken word artists, visual artists and filmmakers, as well as workshops and panel discussions. While the primary organizers of Ladyfest Texas are women, everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend and volunteer at this community festival.
