Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE: BRK.A) is a holding company that owns a number of subsidiaries engaged in a diverse variety of business activities. Founded in 1889, Berkshire Hathaway is headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska. Insurance

Approximately 60 of the Berkshire Hathaway companies are insurance businesses, offering both primary insurance and reinsurance in the property and casualty, life, accident, and health insurance segments. The four primary Berkshire Hathaway groups engaged in insurance underwriting include GEICO and its subsidiaries; General Re and its subsidiaries; Berkshire Hathaway Reinsurance Group, and Berkshire Hathaway Primary Group.

Utility and Energy Businesses

Berkshire Hathaway has a majority ownership interest in international energy corporation MidAmerican Energy Holdings Company. In the U.S. MidAmerican owns two regulated utility companies, PacifiCorp and MidAmerican Energy Company and two natural gas pipeline companies, Northern Natural Gas Company and Kern River Gas Transmission Company. Additionally, MidAmerican holds a number of international and domestic independent power projects, as well as a U.S. residential real estate brokerage firm.

Manufacturing, Service and Retailing Businesses

Through the McLane Company Inc., Berkshire Hathaway provides wholesale distribution and logistics services to retailers, convenience stores, quick service restaurants, drug stores and movie theatre complexes in the United States and Brazil. Berkshire Hathaway also owns Shaw Industries Group, Inc., a carpet manufacturer, that designs and manufactures over 3,000 styles of carpet and laminate flooring for residential and commercial use under about a number brand and trade names, as well as under private labels. Berkshire Hathaway also owns a variety of apparel and footwear manufacturers, including Fruit of the Loom, Russell Corporation, Garan, Fechheimer Brothers, H.H. Brown Shoe Group, Justin Brands.

Building Products

Berkshire Hathaway also owns Acme Building Brands, which manufactures and distributes Acme Brick clay bricks, Featherlite concrete block, and Texas Quarries cut limestone. Acme also distributes building products of other manufacturers, including glass block, brick, floor and wall tile and other masonry products. Through subsidiary American Tile, Acme sells ceramic floor and wall tile, as well as marble, granite, and other stones. Berkshire Hathaway also owns Benjamin Moore Paints. With this business, Berkshire Hathaway formulates, manufactures and retails a range of architectural coatings including paints, stains and clear finishes for use by the general public, contractors and industrial and commercial users.

Berkshire Hathaway owns a majority interest in MiTek Inc., which provides of engineered connector products, engineering software and services, and manufacturing machinery to the truss fabrication segment of the building components industry. Additionally, under the Ultra-Span name, MiTek engages in the light gauge steel framing market. With subsidiary companies Albecca Inc. Berkshire Hathaway designs, manufactures and distributes a line of branded custom framing products, including wood and metal molding, mat board, foam board, glass, equipment and other framing supplies.

Other Manufacturing

Berkshire Hathaway owns CTB, which designs, manufactures. and markets systems used in the grain industry and in the production of poultry, hogs and eggs. Berkshire Hathaway also owns Forest River, Inc., which manufactures recreational vehicles, utility cargo and office trailers, busses and pontoon boats.

Information Services

Berkshire Hathaway owns Business Wire information service, which electronically disseminates on an international basis news releases daily to the media, the Internet, online services and databases, and to the global investment community.

Retailing

Berkshire Hathaway owns a number of independently managed home furnishings and jewelry retailers. Additionally, Berkshire Hathaway has an ownership interest in CORT Business Services, which operates within the retail rent-to-rent segment of the furniture rental industry.

Financial Services

Berkshire Hathaway engages in a number of financial services arenas through subsidiary operations BH Finance and XTRA, a transportation equipment leasing company.

Miscellaneous

Berkshire Hathaway owns, the Scott Fetzer Companies, which consist of a diverse group of 21 businesses engaged in manufacturing and distributing a number of different products for residential, industrial and institutional use. Additionally, Berkshire Hathaway owns FlightSafety International Inc., which engages primarily in the business of providing high technology training to operators of aircraft and ships.

Berkshire Hathaway also owns NetJets Inc., which is a provider of fractional ownership programs for general aviation aircraft.
